  • Gothic Home Decor Tips: How to Make Your Space Spooky All Year Round

Great news! Gothic home decor isn’t just for Halloween anymore. More and more people are embracing the dark, dramatic, and mysterious aesthetic of gothic design to create captivating living spaces that exude atmosphere year-round. If you’re drawn to the allure of shadowy corners, ornate details, and a touch of the macabre, this guide will help you transform your home into a gothic sanctuary that’s both elegant and eerie.

    ## Understanding Gothic Aesthetics

Before diving into specific tips, it’s essential to understand the core elements of gothic design:

    1. Dark color palettes
    2. Ornate and intricate details
    3. Dramatic contrasts
    4. Victorian and medieval influences
    5. Mysterious and slightly spooky ambiance

With these elements in mind, let’s explore how you can incorporate gothic design into various aspects of your home decor.

    ## Color Scheme: Embracing the Dark Side

The foundation of any gothic-inspired space is its color palette. While black is often the star, a truly sophisticated gothic interior incorporates a range of deep, rich hues:

    – Deep purples
    – Burgundy and wine reds
    – Forest greens
    – Midnight blues
    – Charcoal grays

Don’t be afraid to use black as your primary color, but remember to create contrast with lighter accents to prevent the space from feeling too oppressive. Metallic touches in gold, silver, or copper can add a luxurious gleam to your dark backdrop.

    ## Furniture: Victorian Elegance Meets Modern Comfort

Gothic-inspired furniture often draws from Victorian and medieval styles. Look for pieces with these characteristics:

    – Dark wood finishes (mahogany, ebony, or dark-stained oak)
    – Ornate carvings and decorative elements
    – Velvet or leather upholstery
    – Tufted designs, especially on headboards and chairs
    – Claw-foot tables and bathtubs

Mix antique pieces with modern reproductions to create a space that feels timeless yet livable. A large, ornate mirror with a gilded frame can serve as a stunning focal point in any room.

    ## Textiles: Layers of Luxury

Textiles play a crucial role in creating a cozy yet dramatic gothic atmosphere. Consider these options:

    – Velvet curtains in deep colors
    – Lace table runners or window treatments
    – Silk or satin bedding
    – Faux fur throws and pillows
    – Tapestries with medieval or nature-inspired motifs

Layer different textures to add depth and interest to your space. A velvet armchair paired with a silk cushion and a faux fur throw creates a sumptuous seating area that begs to be touched.

    ## Lighting: Shadows and Ambiance

Lighting is perhaps the most crucial element in creating a gothic atmosphere. Aim for a soft, mysterious glow rather than harsh overhead lighting:

    – Chandeliers with candle-style bulbs
    – Wall sconces that cast interesting shadows
    – Table lamps with stained glass shades
    – String lights or LED candles for a magical touch
    – Smart bulbs that can be dimmed or changed to warmer colors

Consider installing dimmer switches to easily adjust the mood of your space. Candles, both real and flameless, are essential for creating that flickering, atmospheric light that defines gothic spaces.

    ## Wall Decor: A Canvas for the Mysterious

Your walls are the perfect canvas for expressing your gothic style:

    – Ornate picture frames containing vintage photographs or dark art prints
    – Wrought iron wall sculptures
    – Antique clocks
    – Mounted faux animal heads or skeletons
    – Victorian-style wallpaper with damask or floral patterns

Don’t overcrowd your walls; let each piece have space to make an impact. A single, large statement piece can be more effective than numerous smaller items.

    ## Accessories: The Devil is in the Details

Accessories are where you can really have fun with gothic decor. Consider these ideas:

    – Skull-shaped objects (candleholders, bookends, planters)
    – Antique books or leather-bound tomes
    – Crystal balls or other mystical objects
    – Ornate picture frames
    – Vintage scientific instruments
    – Dried flowers or preserved insects in shadow boxes

Remember, the key is quality over quantity. Choose a few standout pieces rather than cluttering your space with too many small items.

    ## Plants: Life in the Shadows

While gothic decor often focuses on the dark and mysterious, plants can add a touch of life and organic beauty to your space:

    – Dark-leaved plants like black mondo grass or purple shamrock
    – Dramatic, structural plants like snake plants or bird of paradise
    – Carnivorous plants for a touch of the exotic
    – Dried arrangements or preserved flowers

Display your plants in ornate urns, vintage terrariums, or hanging from the ceiling in macramé holders for an extra gothic touch.

    ## Creating Focal Points

Every room needs a focal point, and in gothic decor, these can be particularly striking:

    – A large, ornate fireplace mantel adorned with candles and curiosities
    – A four-poster bed draped with sheer curtains
    – An antique writing desk with a collection of old books and a quill pen
    – A gallery wall of vintage portraits or dark art prints
    – A dramatic chandelier or lighting fixture

These focal points draw the eye and set the tone for the entire room.

    ## Bathroom: Gothic Sanctuary

Don’t forget to extend your gothic theme to the bathroom:

    – Clawfoot bathtub painted in black or dark gray
    – Vintage-style fixtures in oil-rubbed bronze or matte black
    – Gothic-inspired tile patterns
    – Ornate mirror with an antiqued finish
    – Apothecary jars for storage

A gothic bathroom can feel like a luxurious, spa-like retreat from the modern world.

    ## Outdoor Spaces: Extending the Theme

If you have outdoor space, consider extending your gothic theme:

    – Wrought iron furniture
    – Gargoyle statues or fountains
    – Gothic-style lanterns
    – Dark-colored or black plants
    – A small herb garden with medicinal or “witchy” plants

Your patio or garden can become a gothic oasis, perfect for stargazing or enjoying a moonlit evening.

    ## Balancing Act: Gothic Without Gloom

While embracing gothic decor, it’s important to create a space that feels welcoming rather than oppressive:

    – Balance dark colors with metallic accents and touches of white or cream
    – Ensure proper lighting to prevent spaces from feeling too dark
    – Incorporate personal items and photographs to keep the space feeling like home
    – Don’t shy away from modern conveniences; blend them seamlessly into your decor

Remember, the goal is to create a space that reflects your personality and makes you feel comfortable, not to recreate a haunted house.

    ## Conclusion: Your Gothic Haven

Creating a gothic-inspired home is about more than just decorating; it’s about crafting an atmosphere that transports you to another time and place. By thoughtfully incorporating dark colors, rich textures, and intriguing accessories, you can create a space that’s both dramatically gothic and comfortably livable.

Whether you go all-out with floor-to-ceiling gothic decor or simply incorporate elements into a more traditional space, the key is to have fun and let your personal style shine through. After all, the most important aspect of any home decor is that it makes you feel at home.

So embrace the shadows, celebrate the mysterious, and create a gothic sanctuary that’s spooky and stylish all year round. Your gothic haven awaits! • Bath & Body Works Halloween 2024: What’s New, What’s Cool, When to Buy

Update 1 (9/2/2024):  The Halloween displays have officially been moved to the middle of the store and the manager of my local store says they are not getting in any more Halloween inventory.  If I had to predict, I would say this whole line will be sold out and/ or on clearance by actual Halloween.

Spooky season is starting earlier than ever in retailers (see my article about this phenomenon here), and Bath & Bodyworks is no exception!  The official launch of Halloween was on July 19th (online) and July 22nd in stores.  This year I waited to do my initial buy until I had seen everything in stores, and I was glad I did! I absolutely loved seeing the displays.

I am a longtime fan of both the scent and the aesthetic of Vampire Blood, but this year I fell in love with Candy Apple Cauldron.  Not only does it smell great, but there is something very Beetlejuice about the greens and blacks of the display.

Come to think of it, maybe that was the intention (what with the Beetlejuice sequel coming out soon).

Here’s the thing with Bath & Bodyworks:  their stuff is great, but it usually starts out very overpriced, so you’re better off scoping out everything when it initially drops, then signing up for the app and the email list and waiting for a sale.  This is especially true if you want to buy some of the larger items, like the haunted houses or fancy candle holders. I limited myself to $100 on launch day, then I waited until the first 50% off sale, which happened on 8/4 (approximately two weeks after the initial launch). That first sale is when I would grab up anything big you’ve had your eye on (like this outrageously overpriced haunted house luminary, which is meant to hold a 3-wick candle):

    Is this cool?  Absolutely yes!

    It is worth $275?

I guess if you love it, but I would rather have you get it for half off!  I like these products so I track the sales pretty closely. Sign up for my email list if you want me to let you know when they have sales!

  • Halloween Decor 2024: Trending Items (an Ongoing List)

Halloween Decor 2024: Trending Items (an Ongoing List)

Hey there hi there! Welcome to the blog!   If you’re following my ongoing coverage of Spooky Season, you’ll already be familiar with some of these items, but I wanted to put everything in one place so we could refer to this ongoing list.

Here is what has been/ is trending so far for Spooky Season 2024, where you can get it, and whether I am hunting for it.  If you’re looking for the answer to the question “Why is this thing so popular?” your guess is really as good as mine. I’m just here to report the trends, people!

    1.  Spooky Doodle Tumbler.

There is a whole lore about this one (long story short, the parent company of HomeGoods/TJ Maxx/ Marshalls bought this design from an Etsy seller and didn’t pay for a commercial license, so they were not technically allowed to mass produce it).  I understand that the lawsuit is still pending, but if you want to support the original designer, buy it directly from her rather than hunting for it in stores.

I have enough spooky tumblers in my house, so I have not been searching for this one or adding any to my collection this year.  I do have one spooky floral tumbler in my eBay shop in case anyone is dying for one (pun intended).

    2.  Ghost Walking Dog statue

This one is not really my style as I’m not a whimsigoth fan myself and I don’t have any ghost themes going at the moment, but this item has been trending on the social medias (and on the reseller apps).  This piece has been trending since July so it already has a bunch of knockoffs, which you can find on Amazon and Temu (although, I suppose it goes without saying, but “Buyer Beware” of knockoffs on Amazon and Temu).  If I happen upon it in the store, I will stick it in my eBay shop, so go over and follow that if you’re interested. 🙂

    3.  Beetlejuice Light-up Popcorn Bucket.

I covered this one in my Beetlejuice article, so I won’t go on about it for too long here.  This one is super cute and I am still looking for this one myself, as my ADHD took over and I forgot to check out on the one day I found it on the website (still kicking myself over that one).

    4.  The infamous “Scrote Ghost.”

This is a ghost that everyone has decided looks like a ball sack.

Yes, you read that right.  It’s a ghost that looks like balls.  Everyone is swarming their local Big Lots to find one of these “in the wild.”

All of the Big Lots near me seem to be going out of business, so I am passing on this trend.

    5.  The Cast Iron Cauldron Pot you can actually use for cooking!

That’s the Smith & Clark 4-Quart Cast Iron Cauldron Pot with Handle, in case you used Google to get here.

This one was my # 1 “In Search Of” this year and I am happy to say that not only did I find it for myself (pictured below on my stove), but I made three people’s Halloween wishes come true when I found some in the store and sold them for basically the price of retail + tax + shipping.  Yes, this is a public service I offer. 🙂

I haven’t used this cauldron for cooking yet, but I am absolutely in love with the way it looks in my kitchen and plan to try it out sometime soon. Go follow my TikTok for a video on that!  This piece is $29.99 if you can find it in-store at HomeGoods, $59.99 if you get it on Smith & Clark’s website (sold out at the moment, but sign up for updates!), and stupid overpriced if you buy it from some (most) resellers (I’m not linking to any of them).  Also, there is a rumor going around that this is the same cauldron for basically half the price (although this listing is also sold out, so I have not been able to order it and verify this information). If you don’t have any luck getting this one in-store or from one of the websites, I would say if you really want this one, wait until October to get it from a reseller, because that is when the return period will be over and many of them will be looking to get rid of inventory. 🙂

One thing I will say about this particular cauldron is that it is smaller than you think.  If you’re looking for a bigger one, here’s one you might like.

I’ll be updating this post throughout spooky season to include new stuff that goes viral, so please check back, or subscribe to our email list for updates!

  • The Skeleton Chronicles: A Heartwarming Tale

The Skeleton Chronicles: A Heartwarming Tale

A few weeks ago I stumbled upon a Facebook post that would change my life for the better.

How often can you say those words?!

Anyhow, here’s the post. I’ve obscured everyone’s information to protect all interested parties.

In case the text is too small to read (I get it, we’re either getting older or things are getting tinier), the gist of it is that the people in this house have these two skeletons that they leave out all year, dressing them up and posing them in themes for the various holidays. Apparently this is a really popular thing in this neighborhood that I never knew about, mostly because I work from home and don’t often drive over that way.

Anyhow, one of the skeletons was recently stolen, and that’s what this post is about. The sign says “To the skeleton thief– please bring back my friend. I’m lonely.”  Apparently someone stole the other skeleton!  This got everyone in the neighborhood all incensed, because why can’t we have nice things?  These kind people are taking the time to entertain us with their creative skeleton displays, and someone has to go and ruin it like that?  Totally wrong and unfair.

This is where I come in. I am not even trying to toot my own horn here, because how often in life do you see a problem for which you alone have the obvious and easy solution?

They needed a skeleton. I own a spooky stuff business.  I have skeletons.

This just seemed like a slam dunk to me, so I put one of my skeletons (I sell them right here if you need one) in my car and took it right over to their house. They were not home, so I ended up just leaving the skeleton on their porch. I don’t know why, but I thought it would be funnier if this act of kindness was anonymous, so I left a note to the effect of “Someone on Facebook said your skeleton was stolen, so here is a replacement.  Thank you for your creative displays, which brighten so many people’s days.”

I actually don’t think it was that poetic, since I scrawled it on a piece of notebook paper and tied it to the skeleton.

Here it is on their porch.

Can you imagine coming home to this?  Luckily they are the kind of people who make skeleton dioramas and have a gargoyle on their doorstep, so I have a feeling they were not phased.

I didn’t leave my contact info (because random act of kindness), but I absolutely STALKED the Facebook group to see if a) they got it, b) they liked it, and c) what they would do with it.  I started driving by their house regularly to see if they updated the display.

WEEKS went by, and FINALLY!  Signs of life from the skeleton house!

Again, in case you can’t read this, one sign says “Back to School 2024” and the other says “Thank you kind neighbors for my new friend.”

When I tell you I started crying from happiness and joy at this wonderful sight, I am not even exaggerating. My silly spooky stuff business made a difference in this neighborhood!   I’m posting their updates over on my Instagram if you want to follow me over there.
